How Many Bundles Do You Need for a Sew-In? A Complete Guide
One of the first questions women ask when shopping for hair extensions is:
“How many bundles do I actually need?”
And the answer depends on a few things — your desired length, how full you like your hair, the texture you choose, and whether you’re wearing a closure or frontal.
At Beaute Pro Hair, our bundles are approximately 3.5 ounces each, so here’s a simple guide to help you choose the right amount for your next install.
The Quick Answer
For most sew-ins, 2–3 bundles will give you a full, natural-looking install.
As your hair gets longer, you’ll typically need more bundles because longer bundles contain less hair from top to bottom.
A good starting point is:
12–16 inches: 2 bundles
18–22 inches: 3 bundles
24–26 inches: 4 bundles
28 inches and longer: 4+ bundles
If you love a fuller look, you can always add an additional bundle.
Why Do Longer Lengths Need More Bundles?
Every bundle weighs approximately the same, but the length of the hair changes how that weight is distributed.
Think about it this way: a 14-inch bundle has more hair packed into a shorter length. A 26-inch bundle has that same approximate weight spread across much longer strands.
That’s why two short bundles can look very full, while two long bundles may not give you the same density.
If you’re going for 24 inches or longer, we usually recommend purchasing at least three bundles and considering a fourth if you love extra fullness.
Does Hair Texture Make a Difference?
Yes.
The texture you choose can change how full your install appears.
Curly and kinky textures naturally take up more space, so they can often appear fuller than straight hair using the same number of bundles.
For example, a curly texture such as Beaute Curl, Paradise Curl or Soft Kinks can create a fuller appearance because of the curl pattern.
Straight textures like our S.E.A Straight collection tend to lay flatter and sleeker, so you may want an additional bundle if you prefer a very full straight install.
What If You’re Using a Closure?
A closure covers a portion of the top of your install, which means you won’t need bundles to cover that area.
For most closure sew-ins, 2–3 bundles plus your closure is enough.
For shorter lengths, two bundles may give you the fullness you’re looking for.
Once you move into longer lengths, especially 20 inches and above, three bundles will usually create a more complete look.
What About a Frontal?
Because a frontal covers a larger portion of the front of your head, it also contributes more hair to the overall install.
A frontal paired with 2–3 bundles can create a beautiful full sew-in.
Again, the longer your extensions are, the more hair you’ll want to add.
Do You Need Three or Four Bundles?
This really comes down to the look you want.
If you like your sew-ins to look natural with comfortable everyday fullness, three bundles may be all you need.
If you love your hair very full, you’re wearing longer lengths, or you simply don’t want to risk your install feeling too thin, adding a fourth bundle gives your stylist more hair to work with.
And remember: your stylist doesn’t necessarily have to use every piece of hair.
It’s usually better to have a little extra hair available during your appointment than to realize halfway through your install that you didn’t order enough.
To sum it all up, for most women, 2–3 bundles is a great starting point, while longer installs may require 3–4 or more.
And if you’re still deciding on your texture before purchasing a full install, you can start with a Beaute Pro Hair Trial Pack so you can see and feel the hair for yourself first.
